Dr. Vernon Lindsay

Dr. Vernon Lindsay is the Scholar in Residence at the Umoja Community Education Foundation. Beginning in January 2025, he will assist Umoja in conducting research, publishing findings, leading professional development initiatives, and helping coordinate conferences.
Dr. Lindsay earned a Ph.D. in Policy Studies in Urban Education from the University of Illinois At Chicago. Before Umoja, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in teaching and mentoring with the University of Illinois at Chicago's Honors College and as an associate professor at the American University of Antigua College of Medicine's Education Enhancement Department. He taught classes and researched diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, health, wellness, and learning strategy topics. Dr. Lindsay received the Honoring Our Professors' Excellence Award from the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Excellence in Teaching and Academic Advising Award from the American University of Antigua College of Medicine.
Dr. Lindsay is the author of a weekly blog, several articles, and the books Critical Race and Education for Black Males: When Pretty Boys Become Men and Capoeira, Black Males, and Social Justice: A Gym Class Transformed.
He has presented at notable events, including the Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color Annual Conference, the American Education Research Association's Annual Meeting, the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education, the American Medical Association's Change Med Ed Conference, the Critical Race Studies in Education Conference and Antigua and Barbuda's International Men's Day Summit.
Dr. Lindsay is happily married and the father of three children.
